From the Apartment of the Commander
We will be receiving Eminent District Deputy Grand Commander Peter Joseph Gordon making his official visit to Portsmouth Commandery No. 5. Pursuant to Grand Commandery effort to standardize and strengthen chivalric ritual and tactics, Portsmouth Commandery will be rated on our ritual and tactics during the visit.
On September 20, we will meet for dinner at Ruby Tuesday, 6249 College Drive, Suffolk, at 6 PM before the Conclave. Your Commandery needs you to attend our September 20, 2010 Conclave; the Conclave will open 7:30 PM.
SK Stormy Thorson will present a paper entitled “When Templar Swords Clash.” The paper will be posted to No. 5’s Home Page on the Internet. I have read the paper several times and it is one of the best papers on the clash of ideas between the York Rite Knights Templar and those of the Scottish Rite Knights of Kadosh. You will not want to miss the educational presentation.
Thank you for your support during the summer months:
- We had a nice showing at the Sir Knights and their Ladies Dinner in July—35 people attended. Four Sir Knights attended the Grand Commander’s Official Visit to District No. 1 in Petersburg.
- In August, we had 14 people at the Commandery’s Night at the Ballgame. Thanks to Sir Knight Major Stephenson for the hard work and support for this special event.
- There were three Sir Knights in attendance at the Royal Arch Festival in Richmond’s RAC No. 3. Companions Vincent P. Cannella, from Port Norfolk RAC, and John W. Conroy, from Cradock RAC, were approved to receive the Orders in a Special Conclave on August 28.
- Five Sir Knights visited Hampton Commandery No. 17 on September 6 where they voted on another two petitions for the Orders.
The Royal Arch-Commandery Picnic is scheduled at Cradock RAM on September 11, 12-3 PM.
On September 18th, Companion Vincent P. Cannella will be receiving the Orders at the Knight Templar Festival in Richmond Commandery No. 2. Companion John W. Conroy will receive the Orders later in the Chivalric year.
Several Companions have voice interest in completing the York Rite so I am hoping to have several new petitions to vote on shortly.
If you missed the summer fun, you are not too late for the fall’s activities.
From Refreshment to Labor Again
Cyril E. Brubaker
Vacation time is over,
Summer has come and gone;
We returned to our labors refreshed,
To the work that needs to be done.
We take the Chisel and Mallet,
Te Square, the Level, and Plumb;
Working our trade as Masons,
Doing all tasks as they come
No shirkers or drones among us,
No duties or chores do we shun;
There is much that needs our attention,
For a Mason’s work is never done.
Portsmouth Commandery used to be able to confer all the Orders. It should be our goal to return to that capability again. Sir Knight Bryon Goodwin, the Director of Work, has put together the ritual team for the Order of the Red Cross and he will be shortly putting together ritual teams for the Order of Malta and the Order of the Temple. If you are interested in a role in the Malta and/or Temple ritual, please let Bryon know which positions you are interested in.
Elizabeth Building & Loan has recalled our note for $20,000 at 7%. They offered a note at 5% which is better than best. The Commandery has decided to take the offer. So, now we need to understand our future financial status and act accordingly. I will be appointing an Audit Committee consisting of Sir Knight Generalissimo, Sir Knight Captain General, and Sir Senior Warder to audit the books 2005 to the present. The Audit Committee is to report back to the Commandery at the November Conclave.
October events include:
- We will be visiting Hampton Commandery No. 17, October 4: 7:30 PM at the Newport New Scottish Rite Temple.
- October 18 is Portsmouth Commandery Stated Conclave at 7:30 PM. SK Ney Austin will be presenting a paper on the “History of the Knight Templar Apron.”
- The York Rite Dinner is October 22 at the Granby Street Temple. Wear your Knights Templar Uniform.
- We will be visiting Grice Commandery No. 16, October 25, 7:30 PM at the Granby Street Temple.
- Grice Commandery will host the Grand Commander’s official visit to District 2, October 30; Dinner at 6:30 PM and the Conclave will start at 7:30 PM.
Remember the Orders are not finishing lessons. Please come out and join us and renew your Templar Spirit.
The Masonic Thought for the Month:
Let George Do It
unknown
Some members keep their Lodges strong,
While others join and just belong;
Some dig right in, some serve with pride,
Some go along, just for the ride.
Some volunteer to do their share,
While some lay back and just don't care;
On meeting nights some always show
While there are those who never go.
Some always pay their dues ahead,
Some get behind for months, instead.
Some do their best, some build, some make,
Some never give, but always take,
Some drag, some pull, some don't, some do.
CONSIDER, which of these are you?
Remember: A Mason’s work is never done!

Knight Templar Eye Foundation Life Sponsorship
Life Sponsorship is $30.00 and entitles $1.00 to be taken off your dues. There is also a Patron sponsor for $100.00, and an Associate Patron sponsor for $50.00.Permanent Life Membership
The Permanent Life Membership fee is Eighteen (18) times your dues plus the current dues. The Life Membership is transferable to another Virginia Commandery. It is NOT transferable out of state. At death, the Commandery will continue to receive the funds. You will always be on the rolls as a member! A payment plan can be arranged, call the RecorderPortsmouth Commandery No. 5 Endowment Fund
Portsmouth's operational revenues depend on the interest from this fund. Although you are not required to pay dues, we request that you contribute to our endowment.Baldwin-Brown Fellowship
Funds generated by this program go into the Grand Commandery of Virginia Permanent Endowment Fund to increase the interest earning power of that fund. None of the money donated to the Baldwin-Brown Fellowship will be used for any other purpose. The interest earnings from the already existing Grand Commandery of Virginia Permanent Endowment Fund are used to pay for the costs of operating Knights Templar Masonry in Virginia. This is essential as the Grand Encampment Assessment has almost tripled and Grand Commandery expenses have unexpectedly risen as office rent has gone up considerably. Eye Foundation
Please make additional contribution to the Eye Foundation. If you reach a total of $500 you are eligible for the Knight of Siloam Award. | ||||||||||||||||||
